Reinhard Goebel and Théotime Langlois de Swarte have chosen to present us with an astonishing nugget of the Baroque repertoire! Telemann?s work, written around 1750 for the Dresden Orchestra, is as much a concerto as a suite of dances: seven movements of incomparable orchestral brilliance, in which a marvelously decorative solo violin gives way to equally eloquent wind instruments. Even more surprising is the version for symphony orchestra of Mozart?s brilliant Gran Partita, originally conceived for wind ensemble. For transcriber Franz Gleissner (1761-1818), this seemed a difficult challenge. Beyond mere curiosity, however, it has to be said that, between respect for Mozart?s colors and the invention of new sonorities, this very convincing version deserves to be widely played.
