On the morning of September 1, 1939, 4,000 men set off to confront the German forces south of Krakow. They unknowingly embarked on an unprecedented epic. Engaged in the fighting in France in June 1940 as the 1st Polish Division, this unit landed in Normandy before liberating Abbeville on September 3, 1944.
