The Ensemble Aedes immerses itself in Monteverdi's work, imagining a new dramaturgy for the amorous encounter between Ariadne and Theseus, based on his famous Lamento d'Arianna. Abandoned by Theseus after she helped him kill the Minotaur,
Ariadne sings of her betrayed love in a heart-rending lament. Widely regarded as a jewel in the Baroque repertoire, Arianna's Lamento is the only fragment of Monteverdi's second opera, L'Arianna. In a program richly drawn from Monteverdi's madrigals and punctuated by a number of emblematic pieces from the Aedes repertoire, Mathieu Romano offers a modern rereading of the relationship between Ariadne and Theseus. The voices of the two characters alternate and respond to each other in the chosen works, and at the end of a passionate dialogue marked by enchantment, doubt and pain, the heroine is offered the possibility of revenge: Theseus will succumb to Ariadne's curse for not having kept his promise
promise.
