ABBEVILLE

About

Composed between 1718 and 1721, the six Brandenburg Concerti were dedicated by Johann Sebastian Bach to the Margrave of Brandenburg (great-uncle of King Frederick II of Prussia). The dedication, written in French
according to Prussian custom, gives the title "Six Concerts avec plusieurs instruments". The diversity of the writing is truly astonishing: the choice of instrumentarium (different for each concerto), the form of the pieces, the subtle interplay between references to popular dances and those derived from learned counterpoint, the meeting of German, Italian and French aesthetics?
All these elements seem to synthesize the musical art of the early 18th century. Elusive, complex and virtuosic, it would seem that Bach wished to offer the Margrave the widest possible range of his art in the field of instrumental concertante music, which was highly prized at German courts at the time.
