Beffroi d’Abbeville

The belfry is one of the oldest in France: its construction began in the early 13th century. At that time, it asserted the independence of the city from the seigneurial and religious powers and symbolized the communal power. After having been the heart of Abbeville's town hall for several centuries, it was hit by the bombings of May 1940 and was integrated into the reconstruction of the Boucher-de-Perthes museum in 1954. It is registered as a Historic Monument since 1926 and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 in the serial property "Belfries of Belgium and France". Guided tours are organized regularly during the season.
