I’m a nature lover so I’m trying an outing at the Grand-Laviers bird reserve.
I go with Marc, one of the guides who love sharing their passion with anyone who wants to learn more from them.
With my trainers on, camera ready and a smile on my face, our motley crew sets out: children, photography enthusiasts and nature lovers like me.
The Grand-Laviers bird reserve is unique. It’s a former industrial site covering over 40ha with an exceptional biotope providing food and a safe haven for myriad species: stilts, avocets, wigeons, common teals, damselflies and butterflies to name but a few. It’s halfway between Abbeville and the bay and you can walk or cycle there on the towpath.
Hiding (“muchés” as the locals say) in shelters, we can observe, listen and look at them through binoculars… without being seen! Everyone has an “observation window” at their height, no matter if they’re big or small. The birds must think it’s funny seeing all these pairs of eyes on them.
Warning! There’s one golden rule to follow: silence.
We carry on along the paths and Marc takes out a little microphone that he plugs into his smartphone so we can hear all kinds of birdsong! The birdsong is so realistic that some little birds come close to us, it’s great, we’re like children watching a show.
If you have a question about a species, Marc always has his little book so you can picture his descriptions. It helps us birdwatching and it really helps tell the difference between the many different species of duck in this reserve.
